Stop thinking about boiler failure

Summer time does not cause one to worry much about heating, but as long as you are used to your hot showers with no other alternatives, you might be in for some trouble if your boiler malfunctions when winter arrives. No one remembers about the boiler in their house until that day when it breaks down. Suddenly it becomes a very important and rather expensive piece of essential equipment.

For those of you who are renting, of course you don’t have to worry about repairs and maintenance as the responsibility lies with your landlord and they probably will have landlords heating boiler cover. Should anything go wrong when you are the homeowner the situation is different so you might think of putting a little aside to cover this risk.

You might consider investing in a new central heating system model if your previous one is older than ten years, it would cut the cost of your fuel especially if the new one is a high-efficiency model and it would be less prone to breakdown. The type of central heating system that you should buy would depend upon your existing boiler type, the size of your family and the amount of space in your home. A small sized home housing a few people who want immediate hot water access at all times will be best served with a combi central heating system. Unlike a storage boiler, a combi heating boiler warms the water directly at the mains, thus eliminating the tank section. Hot water can be produced any time and very quickly, but be careful as they have a limited capacity so the hot shower you are taking might suddenly become cold if several other hot taps are turned on at the same time.

A single storage tank is used in a sealed system gas boiler usually placed in an upstairs airing cupboard enabling a large number of people to have multiple showers and taps on the go at once, without compromising hot water availability or water pressure. This central heating system can easily be installed within hours and doesn’t require excess space. But if hot water is used too quickly it would run out because the storage tank hot water would be depleted and is replenishment is not instant.

However the central heating boiler which is most commonly used in older homes is the open vent gas boiler, it occupies huge space and consists of a storage cylinder and two water tanks. This has similar benefits and disadvantages to the sealed systems as it enables several taps to be used at once, but you will have to wait for the water to heat and pressure is sometimes an issue.

Lastly, what’s known as a back boiler gives simultaneous access to hot water from several outlets with sustained pressure; but it may need a large area for installation. The space inside a chimney breast is often used to accommodate a back heating boiler; but installing a new back boiler system to replace another type of central heating boiler is not cost effective. It is great if your new home has a back central heating boiler already as this type of central heating boile costs less to install, if you need to replace your back gas boiler it is better to replace the old one with the same type rather than getting a new type of boiler installed.

It is costly to repair a gas boiler which ever type your home has. You can get some peace of mind if you take central heating insurance because if any thing goes wrong with your heating system your costs will be covered by the insurance supplier or utility company. Take out a heating boiler breakdown policy that covers annual central heating system inspections as well as call-outs and repairs and you could save yourself an extra amount per year.
