Out with gas expenses
It is generally accepted that we should cut our gas use to be kind to the planet. Gas costs seem to be always on the rise and it is therefore also helpful to make better use of the gas you buy. Whilst heating boiler systems have become more cost-efficient in recent years they will typically consume up to fifty percent of all your gas costs. To help you we have detailed below some quick tips to cut your heating charges.
Don’t use the gas central heating in places where it is not required :
Turn off the radiator in any rooms which are not used such as the guest room or utility room. Trimming the number of rooms which are actively heated will contract your gas use. Seal the room off by closing the entrance door and you will have effectively shrunk your home and shrunk your heating charges.
Use the boiler to heat your home rather than other appliances :
If the central heating is on using it to heat one extra room consumes only a little extra gas. A lot of the heat generated by a fire goes up in the flue to the outside, modern central heating systems are much more efficient in heating your home than using an electric fire.
Cut down on draughts by use insulation
If you allow cold drafts to come into your home then you need to pay for more gas to heat this air. The first place to look will be your doorways and ensure that any visible gaps are blocked off. Use a foam based sealer to close off any cracks between your entrance door frame and the window frames where these meet the exterior wall. If you live in an older home you might be astounded how often these gaps occur. Whilst draughts are invisible using a candle flame can help to reveal where they are.
Ensure you are wearing warm clothes indoors :
Putting on a jumper will keep you warm rather than switching up the heating. Maintaining a 1 degree reduction on the thermostat can save up to 10percent on your heating expenses.
Your curtains can help to control temperature :
The sun is very effective at heating your house in the wintertime, when shining, if you keep the curtains opened to allow it in. With falling night-time external temperatures your windows can lose a lot of heat. closing the curtains provides an incremental layer of insulation and will help to trim this heat loss, if you take this tactic over several months you can save large sums on your heating costs. Thin drapes are not as effective as thick ones at preventing this heat loss.
advice around the home :
Some heating boiler systems have a hot water cylinder and this must be insulated. Do not pay to heat water and then let it cool down throughout the day time.
Placing aluminium foil at the rear of radiators could save a large sum each year.
