Emptying your heating system

Emptying your heating system

A fully pumped central heating system can be drained to enable work to be performed. To exchange heating radiator valves or add an additional radiator as an example. Normally this task will be carried out by your engineer but in some circumstances it can be performed by the experienced maintenance handyman.

Whilst there can be a number of reasons the most popular is to flush the radiators. Before you do anything to the actual heating radiator you should switch off the central heating boiler and any gas or electric that supplies the central heating boiler. Prevention of any more water entering the heating system is also a priority.

Your Central Heating expansion tank is where the water is fed into the system. A standard ball-valve is used in the expansion cystern similar to that in a toilet. As the water level rises the ball floats on the surface and shuts off the valve. As the water level falls, say through Emptying, the ball drops in the cylinder venting the valve and allowing more water to enter the central heating system. To ensure that the heating system fully empties we need to stop this mechanism. A good way to do this is to prevent the ball moving by binding it to the top of the cystern.

Having stopped the entry of any water to your heating system you can now take the next step by joining a hose to an outlet valve on a heating radiator and running this to the outside of your property. Once you vent the outlet valve the water will be able to rate of flow through the hosepipe to the external flush. Obviously, if you want to clean the whole heating system you will need to attach the hose to one of the level metal radiators. You now need to be diligent and check that all the water has discharged out and that no more water is getting in before any other work is performed on the heating system.

To make your heating system clear quicker you should open any bleed valves on your heating radiators, starting with the metal radiators on the top level and working your way down. When finished work can now begin on the system.
